The Desire Path
This is a story for anyone who has ever felt like a misfit in the world. It is the story of one mother's sacrificial love and another woman's failure to love unconditionally. It explores the themes of family versus biology, the damage of estrangement, and ultimately, forgiveness and reconciliation.
Anyone who writes knows what a labor of love it is. Characters in novels become as real to the author as her own friends. When I began writing "The Desire Path" the characters seemed to write their own stories. I had no plan or outline of where their lives would go over the 13 year span of the book. Sometimes I was surprised and touched at the scenes coming out of my fingers and on to the page. I have no choice but to believe that this experience is a gift from God, and therefore one that I am compelled to share with others.

The Experience of Book Clubs
I have been honored to have three book clubs read my book (so far). The readers have often found someone to closely relate to in the book, which makes me realize that the characters are realistic. One woman shared that her mother was exactly like Roberta - something no one would wish for.
For two of those book club nights the discussion was carried on by the readers for at least two solid hours. This told me I wrote a book worth discussing. Very gratifying for a writer.
Readers have many questions about the writing process and how I came up with the characters and story. I'm not sure I have an answer for that! I remember sitting on my deck about 4 summers ago and Anais began speaking to me and I wrote what she said on a yellow legal pad.
As far as the story - it was not preplanned, but at some point I had a giant board on the wall with columns of Post-it notes for each of the characters. They reminded me of the character's ages, birth dates, what year and season it would be at each point in the story. It got complicated! And when revisions occurred then everything changed.
The story continued to write itself as it came out of my fingers and on to the screen. Some days were like Christmas morning - full of gifts and surprises. Other days were like living in a barren desert of empty space (and blank pages).
Any writer knows that you go through multiple revisions. you ask generous people to read drafts and give you feedback - and you revise again - always keeping true to yourself, your writing style and your vision for your book.
I will continue to pass my book on to book clubs and treasure the comments and discussion. It's a writer's dream come true. If you have a book club please let me know.
